What is Gold Filled?

Gold Filled (also referred to as rolled gold) is approximately 100 times thicker than gold plating. Gold Filled is not like Gold Plated. It is a sheet of gold which is fused to the surface of a base metal. Gold Filled looks like carat gold; it is extremely durable and under normal wearing conditions will last a lifetime. Gold Filled is popular in the US.

Gold Plated is a coating of gold applied to a base metal, usually by electroplating. This is usually a very thin layer, which is vulnerable to erosion. Until now, gold plating has been more popular in the UK.

Although legally an item can be called Gold Filled if it is proportionately 1/20 ie 1 part out of 20 is gold with the core comprising of a base metal, Treasured Pearls only use premium quality 14 carat Gold Filled which is 14/20 ie 14 x more gold.
